Experts give tips on smart investments for a secure future

Chandigarh, June 11, 2022: A conference to mark the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav was held at Tagore Theatre here. Experts from the city spoke at the conference on ‘Creation of Wealth through Capital Markets’, giving tips on how to make smart investments, including representatives from the Citizens Awareness Group (SEBI recognised as investors association), National Stock Exchange (NSE), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and those from the banking sector.

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence. The Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM) organised the said conference.

Live address was given by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other dignitaries and the conference was organised in 75 cities across the country at the same time.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr. Gulshan Raj, IRS, Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS-2). While speaking on the occasion he said the Finance Minister had aptly given the roadmap of achieving the vision of economically strong India, today when India is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. He said financial literacy plays an important role in every person’s life, adding that a majority of the population still doesn’t understand basic financial concepts. He said it was important to understand budgeting, saving, and investing.

While speaking on the occasion, Surinder Verma, Chairman Citizens Awareness Group, gave a detailed insight into creating wealth from stock markets through latest technological advancements. He spoke about how mobile apps have become popular in trading, and also stressed on challenges in adopting technology and how to overcome it. Verma also brought to fore the risks technology poses, like data thefts, glitches etc causing losses but right use of technology can bring long term gains.

Uma Rani, of the BSE, spoke on ‘Financial Literacy: Primer on Markets’. She stressed on how financial literacy can help achieve our future goals. She talked about several investment options available with us but most of us invest in bank Fixed Deposits (FD’s), adding there are other options as well like the share market, but before investing in the share market one should ensure the financial health of the company in which we are investing.

Sanjeev Talukdar of the NSE, spoke on NSE products and related information, ETFs and security lending and borrowing mechanism. He focussed on how to create wealth and the precautions that should be kept in mind.

Ishpreet Singh of SEBI elaborated on SEBI initiatives for investor awareness. Tejinder Singh, SMART (Securities Market Trainer) apprised the audience about equity derivatives and said the general public is unaware of several investment options.

Pooja Kohli, of Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) gave an insight into wealth creation through smart investments. She explained how important it was to budget our finances and how smart investments can help us in giving long term financial gains.
